Qualification Pathways

Depending on your experience and your qualifications, there are two main ways you can obtain a qualification. These both have different timeframes, costs and requirements.

  • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

RPL is the most popular option to obtaining a qualification, this pathway is much quicker and cheaper to obtain than sitting the traditional method. This option typically takes 1-3 months. RPL for most courses can be completed online and in your own time. For this option you will need a few years experience and you'll need to provide evidence of your experience. • Traditional Method

This option is for those that are fairly new to the industry, the traditional method consists of learning and completing the qualification online or in person. This process typically takes a minimum of 3-18 months to complete, depending if the course is full, part time or self paced.

Did you know?

You can obtain a qualification that is "blended", which is a combination of the above two methods. This is where a student can display competencies in some of the modules, but not all of them. As an example:

David has been working for as a leading hand carpenter for 2 years and has been managing job sites for a residential builder. David would never order materials for the site or prepare contracts with clients, as his employer did this. David was approved for RPL with the evidence he submitted about his 2 years experience as a leading hand carpenter. But he will need to learn (online or in-person) and display competency in ordering materials and preparing contracts with clients to obtain his qualification successfully.
